EU's New Entry/Exit System has had a Shaky Start
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is being rolled out to strengthen border security and track travelers who exceed the Schengen limit of 90 days within a 180-day period. Implementation has been complex, requiring new infrastructure at
border crossings. Many airports are now equipped with biometric kiosks, where visa-exempt travelers from the UK, US, and other non-EU countries must register their data. Registration thresholds rose from 10% to 35% on January 9, 2026, with full implementation
across EU borders expected in April 2026.
